Multiverse or Cyclic Universe? Alan Guth vs Roger Penrose

Skydivephil (Phil Halper) has produced some amazing videos over the years, and this is no exception. It's a real privilege to be able to see two of the biggest hitters in cosmology in conversation together. It's a discussion between the father of inflationary cosmology, Alan Guth

Where Did We Come From?

Here's another short one from Dana Horton. In this one, there are potential arguments to be had over epiphenomenalism and whether mind can properly causally interact with matter or whether it is a byproduct of mechanistic, material processes: Where Did We Come From? (4 minute read; lifetime to

Before the Big Bang: A Multiverse from "Nothing"

Skydivephil and his team have just released a new cosmology film in their Before the Big Bang Series. In previous episodes of the series they have interviewed such names as Stephen Hawking, Sir Roger Penrose, Alan Guth and many others. In this episode, we interview Alex Vilenkin. Vilenkin was the

Reminder - Pope: Big Bang and Evolution True; God Doesn't Use Magic Wand

A few years ago, the Pope made some important announcements that warrant repeating. As the Vatican attempts to move into the 21st century, parts of the US still remain stubbornly behind. Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope Frances, in 2014, said... ...nothing particularly extraordinary since these are not

Creation vs. Big Bang

I have been reading a lot of Thomas Paine recently. I just finished “Age of Reason.” I know that Robert Ingersoll, “The Great Agnostic” of the 19th Century, admired Paine, and it is clear that many of his ideas came from Paine’s writings, especially “Age of Reason.” The phrasing

Guth, Aguirre and others in Fantastic New Cosmological Video

Skydivephil, who, together with his wife, have made some astoundingly good, in depth video documentaries. They have gathered big names in cutting edge cosmology to great critical acclaim. I have interviewed them both here. I am embedding the video below. Now, it does go into some serious cosmology and physics,

Before the Big Bang 3: String inspired cosmology

Skydive Phil has produced, with his partner, some tremendous videos. In fact, I have interviewed them here at SIN. They take special care in dismantling claims made by William Lane Craig, particularly on pain (think the problem of evil) and cosmology. In their latest instalment, they go to town with

Creationists beware: Cosmic inflation: 'Spectacular' discovery hailed

The BBC report this fascinating discovery which seems to confirm the start of inflation (I would take issue with the slight implication that the BB is definitely the start of everything coming into being) or the Big Bang: Scientists say they have extraordinary new evidence to support a Big Bang T

Earth Has No Special Place in Expanding Universe

In a new study, Dartmouth researchers rule out a controversial theory that the accelerating expansion of the universe is an illusion.

Before the Big Bang - Loop Quantum Cosmology Explained

I love Skydivephil. He/She/They have had some properly good ding-dongs with our favourite apologist, William Lane Craig, most recently on the topic of animal suffering which I featured here. I have not had a chance to watch this,. being on hols, but look forward to it on my

Guest Post by Neil Webber - The Causality Paradox

Here is another guest post. The last one by The Thinker has had a thread which has exploded. This one is interesting, and one very similar to my lines of argumentation. Neil is a friend of mine with whom I lost contact. We played ultimate frisbee together at uni, and

Big Bang: Is there room for God?

On 15 October, a group of theologians, philosophers and physicists came together for two days in Geneva to talk about the Big Bang. So what happened when people of such different - very different - views of the Universe came together to discuss how it all began? "I realised there was a need to
