Abortion and "Innocent" "Human life"

You hear this often, indeed on a recent thread, that abortion is the murder or death of innocent human life. However, I *am* aware of laws against destroying innocent human life. This prompts obvious questions about what human life entails and what innocent can mean. Let's tackle innocent

Trump, Men and Abortion

As many know, especially if they frequent Twitter, Trump  signed a ban on federal money going to international groups that perform or provide information on abortions. What was particularly stark about this was the fact that it appeared to be a very male-defined and -enacted thing. The picture has been

Quote of the Day: NathairNimheil on Abortion and Personhood

In a rapidly expanding comment thread on SJWs and the regressive left, a debate with a religious type has developed concerning abortion. Here is a great comment by NathairNimheil: Like you holding an *arbitrary* position of what constitutes “personhood”. So my definition of personhood, which you have never even heard,

Some Florida Christians Want to Kill Women Who Have Abortions

This is a terribly depressing article from Church and State: Abolish Abortion Florida – a Christian-run political group aimed at ending legal abortion in the United States – wants women who obtain abortions to be punished. That is, they believe any woman who obtains an abortion should receive the death penalty. The

Oh Dear, America. Oh Dear.

This is what I have learnt today, and recently. 1. Trump is assembling the richest cabinet in history. Indeed, "Wall Street Wins Again as Trump Picks Bankers, Billionaires". 2. Patraeus gave classified information to his mistress and is up for Secretary of State, thus rendering Clinton's

The BHA reports: Northern Ireland Humanists, the national organisation representing the non-religious in Northern Ireland, has expressed concerns over calls for police interference in anew abortion aftercare service launched by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS). The new service from BPAS aims to provide advice and support to women in

Oklahoma governor vetoes bill to criminalise abortions

The BBC reports following what was reported the other day: Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has vetoed a bill that would make abortion a criminal offence in the US state. Although she opposes abortion, she said the measure was vague and would not withstand a legal challenge. The state senate on

Oklahoma lawmakers pass bill to outlaw abortion

The BBC report on this shocker: Lawmakers in the US state of Oklahoma have passed a bill that would make the act of performing an abortion a crime. Under the bill, a doctor who performs an abortion could be sentenced to up to three years in prison and be barred

God Loves Abortion!!

God Loves Abortion! Or it is necessary for foetuses to die for a greater good. Well that's certainly one of the conclusions that must come from the statistics for natural, spontaneous abortions, or miscarriages; abortions that God has the power to stop, and seemingly designed in to the

Deranged Support for Planned Parenthood Shooting

I am sure you have all heard about the Colorado Springs shooting incident involving a man who, it seems with an axe to grind with Planned Parenthood (over abortion issues), went on a shooting spree. As if that wasn't bad enough, we get some insane comments from the

Abortion: embryos = babies?

This meme does a really good job of exemplifying the intuitive knowledge that we have that embryos are not babies in any qualitative sense.

Abortion, gay marriage and gun control

This is my favourite meme at present. Says it all.

A scientist weighs up the five main anti-abortion arguments

Of all the myths surrounding abortion, I feel that the assertion that it leads to depression and suicide must rank as the most odious. It is a perennial favourite of anti-abortion groups. Anti-abortion campaigners call it PAS – post-abortion-syndrome, a term coined by Dr Vincent Rue. Rue is a prolif

Abortion and Personhood

I have made sticky (sent to the top of the blog post list)  the post Andreas Schueler wrote about the biological aspects of personhood, life and thus the ramifications on views on abortion. The post is excellent and reflects issues with nominalism and realism: how we attach abstract, conceptual labels

Dawkins, Abortion and Catholic Fervour

Someone with whom I once did teacher training is now a fervent Catholic and blogger at his site. We have had many a strong argument on facebook, and recently he alerted me to this blog post to see what I thought. I am now going to critique his piece on abortion and Dawkins.

Pro-life, anti- everything else

This meme is pretty powerful because it is so accurate. I can never understand how pro-lifers are very often pro-gun, anti-universal healthcare and so on. There is a disconnect there, for sure. The Religion Hurts Humanity blog recently posted this on a survey about pro-life attitudes:

Susanne Atanus, GOP Candidate: Autism, Dementia Are God's Punishments For Gays, Abortions

Ack, the Republicans are at it again. Maybe she saw my post on autism meaning that God is unfair. As HuffPo reports: "I am not in favor of abortions, I am not in favor of gay rights," Atanus, who has staged two previous unsuccessful runs for Congress, said during a videotaped portion of the in

El Salvador: Where women may be jailed for miscarrying

El Salvador has one of the toughest anti-abortion laws in the world. A side-effect is that women who suffer miscarriages are sometimes suspected of inducing an abortion - and can even be jailed for murder.

God Loves Infant Death - How Most Souls in Heaven are Automatons

Some time ago I posted a piece called God Loves Abortion, to which Andy Schueler added a nice piece on conception and the creation of the soul and personhood from a biological perspective. The other day on my Free Will, Heaven and the Problem of Evil video, Honest_John_Law linked this summary by Sco

Understanding 'God's war' against abortion and Wendy Davis in Texas

Texas state senator Wendy Davis has electrified the pro-choice movement. Not just because of her sheer endurance in a nearly 11-hour filibuster, not just because she stood up to condescension and sexism, and not just because she did it all with aplomb and grace. For pro-choice activists, it has felt

Gender, abortion, politics - it's all going off in Texas!

The moment was years in the making. It was 11.45pm Tuesday night, and the Texas Senate was poised to enact perhaps the most restrictive anti-abortion bill in the United States. State senator Wendy Davis had filibustered the bill for 11 hours in a remarkable attempt to run out a 30-day special legisl

Conscientious objection to abortion: Catholic midwives win appeal

The article below is from the UK Human Rights Blog. There is an interesting development in allowing subgroups of a society to exempt themselves from national laws or requirements. Then again, is there a sense that there is an analogy here between this and the rights of someone with dietary requireme
