Why doesn't the US census ask about religious identity?

As analysis of the data from the 2020 UK census filters into the public domain, a question arises: Why does the US census not ask questions pertaining to religion? Only about a quarter of Americans know the answer. In the mid-to-late 1950s, the Census Bureau asked a question on religious

Armstrong's Bad Sociological Claims: Religion Makes You a Better Person

Dave Armstrong has recently been involved with me in a protracted debate about the unequal distribution of evidence for God’s existence, and God being unfair. Within the debates was a side point about whether this unequal evidence is of benefits in our earthly existences or whether it is just

Assessing the Claim that "Christians Are the Most Persecuted Group"

I was involved in an argument on Facebook concerning the news of the cathedral in the Frensch city of Nantes. This was fresh news: it was only just happening. And yet, already, the person in question wrote this comment alongside a video of the burning building: There are people who

Democrat Candidates and the Religiosity of Their Supporters

Pew Research Center have been at it with their data collection concerning the Democratic candidates for the primaries. The synopsis is interesting if hardly surprising: On the whole, among registered voters who identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, Protestants and Catholics are most likely to name Joe Biden

Millennials Are Leaving Religion And Not Coming Back

The ever-interesting FiveThirtyEight ave produced a piece on the deconversion of millennials that is worth a read. Some 40% of millennials (aged between 23 and 38) now state they are religiously unaffiliated. Is it a short-term decision or more of a permanent change, though? Statistics are now coming in. As

Quotes of the Day on Growing Religion in Modern Society

I posted a piece the other day asking, given the continuing trend towards less religiosity in the modern developed world, how you would (not that we would want to) reverse that trend towards greater societal religiosity. Here are a number of thoughtful comments amongst many: Anthrotheist - I have been

What Could Give Religion the Upper Hand Once Again?

What Could Give Religion the Upper Hand Once Again?

The other day, I wrote about how religion is on the decline in the United States. This is a long-term trend that doesn't look like being reversed any time soon. Indeed, it is a long-term trend throughout the developed world. There are many reasons for this, not least

Over Quarter Follow No Religion: Americans Becoming Less Christian

I know I'm a bit late to the game on this one as I meant to post this last week. The Pew Research Center has produced more data concerning the religiosity of Americans, and the trend towards irreligiosity continues, particularly amongst the young. As The Guardian reports: The

UK: Atheism and Islam on the Rise; Christianity Suffers 'Dramatic Decline'

This is nothing unusual and fits in with the trends I have often reported here. Atheism and Islam look to be increasing in the UK, and Christianity is taking a beating. As The Telegraph reports: hristian belief has halved in Britain in 35 years with just one in three people

Religious Commitment, Education, Age, Income & Security

Yesterday, I wrote a piece reporting on some research done by the Pew Research Center on the prayer behaviour of people from various countries around the world. I then commented and linked other research talking about religiosity and its connection to GDP and income inequality. I will continue this today.

Religion in the US Is No Longer Exceptional (and a Chat about the Afterlife)

I have reported on the many surveys and the improved data (in terms of collection and methodology, and honesty of subjects) over the last decade that continues to show the trend in America - the rise of the "nones". This trend shows no threat of abating. Indeed, it

Number of non-religious people in Britain jumps by 46%, new figures show

I'm not quite sure about the wording of the headline here from Humanists UK, but the sentiment is certainly plain to see. One of the challenges that receives the growing numbers of Muslim, Jewish and Hindu portions in the population see what you think. The number of people

More Catholics Considering Abandoning the Church

These excerpts come from the Wall Street Journal, which is behind a pay wall, but the headline stats are interesting. See what you think: More Catholics Considering Abandoning the Church By Ian Lovett – The Wall Street Journal March 13, 2019 4:00 a.m. ET . . . according to new research conducted

The Chequered Picture of Religion around the World

The demographics of religion around the world is a mottled picture. Here, The Journal states: Attendances are plummeting, there aren’t enough people entering the priesthood to replace the ageing clerics and masses are being reduced across the country. There has been a revolution in societal attitudes and laws – on

UK Church in Crisis: Only 2% of Young Adults Identify as C of E

Looking to the future of religion in the UK, the Church of England should rightfully be worried. Very worried. One might argue that as the established state church declines, evangelical churches might be on the rise, Catholicism and Islam, due to immigration, might be on the rise. Either way, this

Religion, Atheism and the Young

You quite often hear it said that the youth of today, the Millennials and so on, are less religious than the older generations. This is certainly true in America as research has consistently shown. However, this can also be seen more globally. As ever, there are some countries who defy

New poll reveals just 5% of British Christians became Christian after leaving school

I love these demographics of religion pieces that come out. This is from Humanists UK: Just 5% of Christians say that they became Christians after reaching the age at which they left school, a new poll commissioned by the Church of England has revealed. The poll, carried out by ComRes,

Latest British Social Attitudes: 71% of young adults non-religious, just 3% are Church of England

From Humanists UK: The latest findings of the British Social Attitudes Survey, published today, reveal 71% of 18-24 year olds say they belong to no religion, while just 3% say they are Church of England and 5% say they are Catholic. These latter two figures only increase slightly to 5%

Age Is the New Class in UK Voting: Age 34 Is the Crossover

Labour used to be the party fo the working class, what with its history in workers' rights. Not so much anymore. Analysis from YouGov shows that age has become the new class in dividing the nation, along with education. Here are some snippets from them: Age: The new dividing
