Well That Escalated Quickly: Knowledge and Consequentialism Discussed

So yesterday I posted a piece being very critical of Islam as a religious theology (in the context of teaching RE), just as I have spent 10 years doing with Christianity. The comments thread exploded and, I have to say, the conversation was really pretty good. There were lots of

How Fear Affects Politics

I have two videos to show you that should express the connection between physiology and political ideology: and the superb TED talk by David Pizzaro: Let me know what you think (I use the second video in my free will talk). Stay in touch! Like A Tippling Philosopher on Facebook:

On Toleration

We recently resurrected the Tippling Philosophers, our friendly group of thinkers who meet up at the pub to discuss philosophy and, well, everything. This was the subject of our newly reincarnated group and the discussion was good. Toleration is also something that came out recently during the issues that took

Quote of the Day: DennisLurvey on the Non-Nones

On a thread on the post on the growing nones in the UK, DEnnisLurvey stated this: the religious say the nones are just lost and will come back to the pews, polling companies say they are people who don't believe their religions stories any longer and won'

On "flabby liberalism"

Tony Blair featured in a really interesting article on the BBC yesterday, looking critically at liberalism. I think he had a good many points. I will list some of them here: ...he warns that too often the West can "be made to feel guilty about itself" and fails

(Liberal) Implicit Egotism Fallacy or Bias and Islam (again)

I was talking recently to a fellow liberal who happened to be a Hindu making correctly scathing attacks on UKIP, media bias and misrepresentation and, you guessed it, Islam. Again I was somewhat frustrated that an intelligent and informed guy was getting so much right and yet made one big error. I s

On Islam and answering my critics

I have had many discussions concerning Islam and my views pertaining to it. I would like to flesh out here some of the criticisms I have had and answer them properly, also offering this as a post that I can point people to when this undoubtedly pops up again.
