Crime & Punishment

Chauvin, Causality and JL Mackie's INUS

You could be mistaken for thinking that this post was about free will. It can be, but I am more concerned with the general idea of causality in the context of Derek Chauvin's court case to decide whether the death of George Floyd was homicide or not. [caption

On Left and Right Politics: Andy Ngo and Marie Colvin

I know that this was the subject of my last piece and I apologise if I’m going to bore you. However, this is something I’ve been brooding upon to the last couple of days. I have seen a number of friends and colleagues posting and writing about this

Analysing Antifa Attacking a Right-Wing Journalist

One of the big pieces of news that rocked the internet this weekend was concerning an anti-far counter-protest in Portland, Oregon on where a right wing-journalist, Andy Ngo, was attacked and injured and had some camera equipment stolen. The right-wing media are going ballistic about this incident in a way

Determinism and Moral Responsibility

Free will and determinism have been back on the blog menu over the last week or so. One commenter (Michael) asked me about morality/moral responsibility and determinism. I've written about this before and this piece is broadly taken from a previous blog article with a few additions.

Moral Responsibility and Free Will

Check out this TEDx talk from Raoul Martinez on the subject of free will, causal determinism and moral responsibility. I agree with everything therein. Charles Joseph Whitman (June 24, 1941 – August 1, 1966) was an American engineering student and former U.S. Marine, who killed seventeen people and wou

Adam & Eve as a Two Horned Dilemma; God as Morally Culpable

Adam and Eve present a real problem, a thorn in the side of believing Christians. There is a two horned problem of using Adam and Eve as representative of humanity. If they are just like humanity and fail as a result, then God has badly designed humanity to fail. If

Moral Responsibility (and the Lack of Free Will)

'Trick Slattery is a great resource for infographics and good introductory book on free will and determinism. Check out his website at: Breaking The Free Will Illusion Loads of good stuff there. Here is an infographic looking at moral responsibility in terms of a lack of free will and

Another Tippling Philosopher defends free will... Part 1

There has been a new member of the Tippling Philosophers group to which I attend and I have been involved in some long disputes over the existence or not of free will. This is why my posts have recently been top heavy on the subject. This was the piece he

Thoughts on free will

A new Tippling Philosopher has recently joined our group and come to the last few meetings. I was discussing free will with him in the pub, and he seemed to fail to understand how the Principle of Alternative Possibilities worked, and how the incoherence of free will seems insurmountable. Here is th
