White Evangelical Support Through the Pandemic, and Going Forward

The coronavirus has caused all sorts of changes in behaviour over its course, but one demographic that is always interesting to look at is the support white evangelicals have for Trump. This is because Trump, if he had been a Democrat, would have been absolutely eviscerated for his moral behaviour

Bitecofer on Republicans' & Democrats' Election Strategies & Predictions

If you're going to watch anything today, watch this. Bitecofer has really created a reputation for herself to be one of the most reliable and interesting pollsters and analysts around. Here, there are loads of nuggets and I only wish that she was interviewed for longer: Lots to

Coronavirus Chat with Andrew Hall: Philosophy, Politics & Health

Here is an interview chat I did with fellow Patheos Nonreligious blogger Andrew Hall. We touch on health, pandemics, politics (such as the Democratic primaries), psychology and philosophy in a genial chat. Let me know what you think: Check him out at his fellow Patheos blog: https://onlysky.media/ahall

Coronavirus

On "Chinese Coronavirus" and Unprofessional Press Conferences

We all know what coronavirus is, and most of us know what Covid-19 is. So I'm not really sure why certain people are now calling it "Chinese coronavirus". Apart from I do. Because these certain people are universally Republicans. "Chinese" is not an informative

Republican Commenters Defend Impeachment Witness Scenario

In my recent article about the trumps impeachments, I challenged Republican commenters here at my blog to defend not calling forward witnesses to testify. Now, I'm not asking them to pull down the impeachment as a whole, but just to give their best justifications as to why, given

Abortion: GOP Virginia Candidate - Ankle Bracelets for Pregnant Women

Yup. It's true. Just when you thought they couldn't get more insane... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Njp_RhKwqg Rewire News reported: A Republican candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates, a hotly contested chamber in next month’s state elections, compared gun control to

The Christian Right Is Helping Drive Liberals Away From Religion

The political and religious - indeed almost any - landscapes have been polarising for a number of years. Days of nuanced centralism seem to be somewhat distant, now. Recently, FiveThirtyEight published a fascinating article, "The Christian Right Is Helping Drive Liberals Away From Religion", discussing how liberals are

North Carolina

North Carolina Republicans' Vile Behaviour

No, this has little to do with atheism and religion, but man, on a number of accounts, the GOP in North Carolina are a terrible bunch. Cohen starts his analysis after 3:30. The Democrat here has every right to be upset:

The Party Switch (and PragerU)

I had not been aware of who PragerU were. It amazes me how insidious the disseminators of supposed information are, particularly in the US. For those who don't know, PragerU (Prager University) is not a university but an online "educator" funded by right-wing, conservative organisations and

Chomsky on How Trump Was Elected

Noam Chomsky does a really good job of explaining how Trump got elected back in 2016. There is no rocket science to this and much of this I have talked about previously. However, I like the way that, as the commentator states, Chomsky did this so concisely. https://www.youtube.

Midterm Summary

Well, what a mixed bag of nuts that was. It wasn't quite the Democratic blue wave that we were warned in the media hype that could happen. However, there were some notable movements within the American political system. No doubts, all of you will know by now facts

Trump: Mini-Mes and the Gender Gap

There are a couple of things that I want to mention today in the context of Donald Trump and the upcoming midterm elections. First of all, let's look at the fact that many Republican candidates are looking to copy everything about Donald Trump in their approach to campaigning.

An Amazingly Detailed Political Map

Some of you may already have seen this interactive map. If not, check it out. The New York Times has done a sterling job. It is a great interactive tool to see how the voting panned out in the US election. What is most fascinating, and no real surprise other

Why Trump's Support Maintains

Trump is doggedly holding onto the support he garnered to become President. With each moral and political transgression, his support either remains the same or even increases. One recent set of data from the Voter Study Group showed something surprising: more than 80% of Trump's votes came from

Republicans (Moral Conservatives) More Likely to Cheat on Spouses than Democrats

Republicans have traditionally been more inclined to espouse tight moral conservatism, especially within the sexual domain. Of course, with three-time married pussy-grabber and alleged marital rapist Trump as their idolised number one, anything goes. Because they can't be seen to criticise Trump, they find it hard to deal

The NRA and Ultimatums

This letter is rather scary. Oh the power of the NRA! Is this how competent democracies are supposed to work? Decisions for the highest bidders... Lobbying is a disgrace.

Are There More Conservatives Than Liberals?

Received wisdom from numerous polls suggests that conservatives outnumber, in the States, liberals. So I found it interesting that, on reading an article on the brilliant FiveThirtyEight website (from Nate Silver), this tide seems to be turning: As recently as 2010, there were more self-described conservatives than self-described liberals in

How the Republicans Do (Tax) Policy

This is a disgrace to politics. Elizabeth Warren highlights the very broken system that is American politics and law-making.

Roy Moore, Polarised Politics, Double Standards and Ignoring Moral Disasters

Most readers will probably know about the evangelical candidate for the Alabama state seat, Roy Moore, and the sexual allegations. There are now some four women cited as claiming sexual abuse involving minors (one of the women being fourteen at the time, and with some thirty people on the record

Trump to Take 17 day Golfing Holiday

Trump once told a New Hampshire campaign rally: "I'd just want to stay in the White House and work my ass off and make great deals." He has also spent years slamming Obama on Twitter for the cost of his holidays. Now, according to Associated Press,

US Democracy under Attack from the “uninhibited use of lies, false statements and bad science”

There is a fascinating article (drawing from another in Wired) in the Independent concerning the rise of dangerously illiterate (in terms of epistemology) people in positions of power in the US government. This is threatening science and scientists, and the world at large, considering climate denialism is prevalent in the
