Bad politics, bad religion collide in 'God Made Trump'

Sometimes claims are so off-the-wall that you really wonder whether the claimants believe themselves. Case in point: "God Made Trump"?

When a human individual is worshipped, criticism is blasphemy

In the process of turning a person into an unassailable god, we gradually open ourselves and others to overwhelming danger.

cognitive dissonance

Trump and his cult of cognitive dissonance

Trump is in legal hot water. But what will be more interesting for observers is not his reaction but that of his fervent followers.

Supreme Court: 'a 7-2 conservative majority that would last a quarter century'

There is no doubting that Donald Trump was one of the most successful presidents in US history—which is saying something for a man who won only one term and lost the public vote twice. By a lot. The presidential vote is arguably a vote for Supreme Court nominations. When

The bothsidesism of Trump's CNN town hall

CNN hosted what has been seen by many as a disastrous television appearance of the Presidential nominee-to-be in an hour of lies and playing to a partisan crowd. And my, the crowd was partisan. The Guardian summed up many analysts' exasperation in their piece "‘What was CNN thinking?

Are the Biden documents a Trumpian parallel? Not even close

It might be easy to think that the recent Biden classified documents blunder is one that mirrors the Trump debacle, but you would be wrong. Here's why. First, let's unpack exactly what happened with the Trump classified documents. Trump's documents Back in May 2021,

Brittney Griner and the comparative worth of humans

What we value and how much we value any given thing is a subjective affair. We might look at price tags on things, but they are for guidance only. If you aren't prepared to pay that much for a widget, you won't buy one. You can

Erdoğan uses smoke and mirrors in deadly strikes against Kurds

Although Turkey is a historically secular country, President Recep Erdoğan is an authoritarian leader who, not unlike Vladimir Putin, has curtailed freedom of speech and press to solidify his continued rule. And much like Putin (whom he still calls “dear friend”), he has unduly influenced the judici

Oh by the way, Trump is running in 2024

Donald Trump is quickly becoming passé. In case you hadn't seen page 6 of your local newspaper, the former president announced the other day that he is running for POTUS in 2024. This should be huge news, but it turned out to be something of a damp squib.

A summary of Trump's crimes. Well, his recent ones

The past has finally caught up with Donald Trump. This has been a long and torturous story to show that eventually, and even when we thought it wouldn't, bad people doing bad things will end up in trouble. But what exactly has the former president done wrong? The

Truss is UK's new PM: Echoes of Trump?

Liz Truss has just become the new UK Prime Minister after Boris Johnson was forced to resign following strings of allegations of lying and the Partygate scandal. It now seems a long time since the highest government politicians and accomplices were attending boozy parties while the rest of the country

Thou shalt not steal: Theft and the Presidential Records Act

For understandable reasons, much of the recent public discussion about Team Trump’s mishandling of official documents has focused on the situation’s more dramatic and controversial elements. The FBI’s unprecedented execution of a search warrant at an ex-President’s estate. The potential national security implications of some of

The end of 'trump,' or how to wreck a perfectly good word

An article co-written by Jonathan MS Pearce and Bert Bigelow Fifty years ago, I was an avid bridge player, and a member of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). I never made it to Life Master, but I accumulated enough Master Points to qualify for lesser titles like Junior Master.

The stark similarity between Trump support and God belief

The January 6th hearings have been eye-opening and should leave no one in two minds about the hugely questionable moral behavior of Trump. Christian theologians and apologists have one job: to maintain the primacy—the moral perfection—of both God and the Bible. Everything they do is to maintain both

Democratic Party

Trump won politics. But can he win again?

You can say anything you like about Trump, but he has won politics. And he's probably going to try again, to most likely avoid jail, because let's be honest: he certainly doesn't need it to achieve anything political. He will never ever top this

And now Florida. Losing and legally challenging elections is the new norm

Trump has now forged a new path for American democracy, one that is distinctly un-democratic, and rather similar to a child throwing their toys out of the pram. It now appears almost required behavior that, upon losing an election as a GOP candidate, one must challenge the legality of the

"Russia Collusion Is a Hoax!" Hmm, Not So Much.

This piece is in response not just to some commenters here, but in light of a leak from a couple of days ago from Russia that may have been lost in the news noise and coronavirus world we live in. There are a few right-wing crazies on these boards who

Trumpian Conspiracy Theories Fuelling Insane Republican Big Lie Advocacy

As I discussed the other day, things are getting progressively worse in the US as half of the country are happy to let it slide towards fascism, and the other half appear powerless to stop it from doing so. Insane conspiracy theories are being used to fuel dangerous voter suppression

The GOP Sustained Assault on Democracy

There are some really terrible moves being made by the GOP at all levels of politics in the US. This has arguably been going on for decades, but most pointedly so since Trump's election in 2016. There is a very good case to suggest that the GOP is

The Big Lie Lives on: Cheney Is Ousted for Telling the Truth

I am no fan of Liz Cheney - she is a hardcore conservative. Conservative voters should love her. Unfortunately, she's also a fan, recently, of...truth. And conservative voters appear to have become, in the main, a cult. A cult of personality. Of Trump. And now, because she

Election Fraud!

We have had to listen to too many people spread too many lies for too many months. The Big Lie needs to be locked up, the key needs to be lost forever, and the US needs to move on. But still, it persists. But still, the GOP insist on shenanigans

Christians Worship A False Idol

1 Corinthians 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. Jeremiah 10:2-5 Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree

Surveying the Rubble of the Ruins Left after January 6th

The insurrection happened, the second impeachment happened. The vote happened, the fallout is happening. Many people are depressed about the state of democracy now in the US, and whether this ruling sets a precedent for a January Exception. It does. Let me throw in a little bit of my analysis,

A Must Watch on Trump-Putin Collusion

Conservatives love to shout down any claims of Russian collusion when discussing Trump. What liberals could do with is some people who have done a tonne of research and spoken to top experts in the geo-political and intelligence arenas. Enter stage right Active Measures. Wow, how did I not know
